In today's game, you do not have to be an out-and-out striker to be a prolific goalscorer.
In fact, many of the coveted goal-scorers today aren't strikers at all. The like of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo do not necessarily start in the classic centre-forward position yet still find the back of the net reguarly.
So here we take a look at the five best young attacking players in world football at the moment, taking in to account their goal-scoring records as opposed to their official position.
5. Erik Lamela | AS Roma & Argentina | Age: 21 years
Lamela has recently been playing just behind Francesco Totti and that has paid dividends as he's having his best goal-scoring season.
With 14 goals from 28 appearances, Lamela averages a goal every two games, which is good for a forward of his age.
In 2011 he scored three goals in four games for the Argentinian U-20 side, again proving how prolific a goal scorer he is.
4. Stephan El Shaarawy | AC Milan & Italy | Age: 20 years
The young Italian burst onto the scene this season, carrying AC Milan single handed during the first half of the season. He has scored an incredible 16 goals in the league in his first full season at Milan and has also scored 19 goals in all competitions for the Milan outfit.
He's going through a dry patch right now but he will only get better as his stats suggest. He has already scored a goal for the Italian national team against France in a friendly.
3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang | St. Etienne & Gabon | Age: 23 years
Pierre has been vital in St. Etienne's quest for a Champions League spot as they are extremely reliant on the Gabon striker for goals. Last season he scored an incredible 18 goals in all competitions but this season he is having a much better year scoring 18 times in the league itself making him the second most prolific striker in Ligue 1 only behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
He has scored 20 goals in all competitions this season and can still better his tally. With 8 goals for the national side throughout his career, Aubameyang could be one of the best young strikers in the world.
2. Neymar | Santos & Brazil | Age: 21 years
Often described as the next Pele, there has been a lot of hype surrounding Neymar for the past few seasons. He has been prolific for Brazilian club Santos scoring 135 goals for them since 2009.
Each and every video of him is quickly posted and circulated around the globe making him probably the most watched footballer on the planet.
He has already scored 19 goals for the Brazilian national team.
1. Robert Lewandowski | Borussia Dortmund & Poland | Age: 24 years
Lewandowski has been one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga for the past two seasons scoring freely for Dortmund. He recently scored a sensational four goal haul in Dortmund's 4-1 win against Real Madrid making him the first player in the Champions League to score a hat-trick against the Los Blancos.
Last season he scored an incredible 30 goals in all competitions but he has already topped that this year reaching 35 goals in all competitions with games still to spare.
Lewandowski could still cross the 40-goal barrier making him one of the youngest to do so. He has also scored 17 times for Poland showcasing his prolific nature for club and country.
152 goals since the start of his career suggest that he is the best young striker in world football right now.
