Real Madrid’s Alonso still believes after annihilation in Dortmund
Xabi Alonso confident Real Madrid can beat Borussia Dortmund and reach the Champions League final
Real Madrid can still reach the Champions League final despite their 4-1 first-leg defeat to Borussia Dortmund, according to Xabi Alonso.
“We have six days to wait and we can turn this result around,” he said in the post-match press conference.
Robert Lewandowski scored all four goals to shock Jose Mourinho’s men at the Westfalenstadion, but the ex-Liverpool engine-roomer insists the tie is far from over.
“We can do it in the second match at home, even though we are not happy with this match right now,” he declared.
“The fans’ support will be crucial in the second leg, but we have to be the ones to make the first move so that they can get behind us.”
World Cup winner Alonso gave away a penalty which was subsequently dispatched by Lewandowski, but he acknowledged that the Germans were the better side.
He said: “Borussia competed better than us and we have to learn for the next match because we have little margin for error.”
The previous night saw Bayern Munich dismantle Barcelona in similar fashion, with few now expecting a Spanish team to feature in the final at Wembley.
But Alonso remained upbeat, suggesting that Madrid couldn’t wait for the return leg at the Bernabeu next Tuesday.
“We have six days to wait and we can turn this around,” he said.
Los Blancos haven’t reached the Champions League final since 2002, and will have to score at least three times next week to have any chance of ending that wait.
