Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski is one of the hottest properties in the footballing world at present - but a few years ago he was very close to joining Blackburn Rovers.
Before the Polish striker joined German outfit Borussia Dortmund, he was plying his trade in Poland for Lech Poznan and was very close to agreeing terms with Blackburn Rovers, but a natural issue prevented that move from happening.
Back in 2008, Lewandowski was in talks with Rovers ahead of a potential move and it was arranged for him to fly over to England to talk to the club, but an Icelandic ash cloud cancelled all flights which meant the striker couldn't get over to England to talk to the club.
Sam Allardyce, who was managing the club at the tie, had reportedly been in touch with Lewandowski and had invited him over to watch Blackburn play Everton, with the intention of them discussing terms ahead of a potential move to Ewood Park.
With the plan agreed, all the Polish striker had to do was get over to England - which these days is simple enough - but mother nature seemed to think twice as a volcano eruption prevented Lewandowski from getting to England.
The player's agent has revealed that it is true about how close he was to signing for Blackburn Rovers and said driving there was never an option.
"He got the invitation [from Blackburn], but due to the cancellation of the flights he could not go, and it makes no sense to drive," said agent Cezary Kucharski.
After Lewandowski's sensational performance for Dortmund against Real Madrid, which saw the Pole striker score four goals, it was then announced that Tottenham were close to signing the striker.
Former Spurs player Steve Archibald apparently offered Lewandowski to Tottenham for a cut-price deal, but the club rejected the offer.
He posted on Twitter: "Just a note of interest for Spurs fans, I offered Robert Lewandowski to Spurs when he was still playing in Poland, for less than 5m, pity!
"To be fair, when they said no I offered him to other clubs who also said no!"
