Top five: Premier League loan signings of the season

Published 3 Comments

A loan deal between two football clubs can be very effective for both parties involved in the deal. It helps to develop the player for the parent club whilst also improving the squad of the loaner.

This season has seen a number of loan signings shine in the Premier League so we take a look at the five deals that have benefitted clubs the most.

5. Andros Townsend | Tottenham to QPR

Townsend reunited with former boss Harry Redknapp in the January transfer window and has since impressed and proved that he can play in the Premier League.

Since arriving Townsend has played nine games for QPR and has managed two goals and one assist - including a half-volley wonder strike from 25 yards out. Townsend is a pacey and tricky winger and the 21 year old could now have a good future at White Heart Lane.

4. Danny Rose | Tottenham to Sunderland

Another player Tottenham have loaned out this season, Rose is a regular face in the under-21 England setup and impressed Martin O'Neill throughout the season before he was sacked.

Rose seems to have a place under Paolo Di Canio as well playing every game under him since he arrived. In total, Rose has made 24 appearances for the Black Cats and has assisted once.

Rose doesn’t provide much going forward, but his defensive maturity bodes well for the 22-year-old's future.

3. Sascha Reither | FC Cologne to Fulham

Reither joined Fulham on loan in the summer transfer window and has proved to be a solid option for Martin Jol at right back all season. The 30-year-old has brought good experience to the team and has played 32 games this season while getting one goal and three assists for the team.

Sascha has added stability to Fulham's right flank in not only a defensive role but also an attacking one.

2. Jonathan de Guzman | Villaareal to Swansea City

De Guzman has impressed this season on loan under Michael Laudrup and so far has created six goals and scored four. The Dutchman has been exactly what Swansea needed in the creative aspects of their midfield after losing Joe Allen to Liverpool in the summer, who was the catalyst of creativity for Swansea last season.

De Guzman who operates just behind the striker is a typical playmaker with good all round technical ability and fits in perfectly with Swansea's passing philosophy and will be remembered by the Swansea faithful with a stunning free kick against Stoke City.

1. Romelu Lukaku | Chelsea to West Brom

Lukaku was desperate to go out on loan from Chelsea to gain Premier League game time and prove that he has the ability to play at the Premier League's highest standard.

Romelu is physically one of the best in the League, with his terrifying pace and vigorous strength he is one powerful force, combine that with good ability on and off the ball, smart finishing with his feet and head and the positive willingness to play football and Chelsea have got some player in their hands.

At only 19-years-old Lukaku is one of the hottest prospects in Europe and has only increased his profile with his temporary stay away from Stamford Bridge under Steve Clarke.

The big Belgian’s marvellous goal tally of 13 goals in 16 starts this season makes him the best loan signing of this Premier League season.
