Uruguay defender issues transfer blow to Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur transfer news: Alvaro Pereira set to stay at Inter Milan
Tottenham Hotspur target Alvaro Pereira has played down the possibility of leaving Inter Milan in the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to north London in recent months, according to talkSPORT, with some reports suggesting the Uruguayan could move to White Hart Lane in a swap deal for Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
However, the left-back – who played under Andre Villas-Boas at Porto – insists that he is happy with life at the San Siro, and willing to stay at the Serie ‘A’ club.
"This is a wonderful team and there are no problems between us. I am a new player in this squad, but I can say the whole club and fans only want one thing - to win. An Inter player must always want to win,” he said, according to the radio station.
"I respect Inter and that doesn't change knowing other teams are interested [in me]."
Assou-Ekotto has been in-and-out of the Tottenham Hotspur side this season, with injuries affecting his involvement in north London.
And, with the report claiming Villas-Boas remains an admirer of his former player, a move in opposite directions would have made sense for the duo.
However, Pereira’s comments appear to end Spurs’ hopes of landing the player, and AVB will have to look elsewhere if he wants to strengthen in the position at the end of the season.
