Arsenal and Fulham are set to go head-to-head in the race to sign Matthew Lowton, according to reports.

The 23-year-old full-back has been a rare shining light at Aston Villa this season, despite their struggles at the bottom of the Premier League table.

And Metro report that, should the Villains go down this season, then Lowton is likely to be tempted into a move away from Paul Lambert’s side.

Gunners chief Arsene Wenger is ‘a big fan’ of the player, according to the report, and would need to spend in the region of £5million to bring the former Sheffield United starlet to the Emirates Stadium.

The paper goes on to claim that Arsenal have lined-up Lowton as a possible replacement for Bacary Sagna, who is being linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

However, Fulham are at an ‘advanced stage’ in their efforts to bring the player to Craven Cottage, according to the report, with Martin Jol appearing to have the advantage in a capital transfer battle.

Much will depend on Villa's finish to the season, but both the Cottagers and Gunners will be monitoring the situation closely.
