Newcastle United have set their summer transfer sights on Nigerian defender Godfrey Oboabona, according to reports.
Metro claim Toon chief Alan Pardew is ‘desperate’ to add to his defence at the end of the season, with reports in the player's homeland going on to claim that a £1million move could take place.
Oboabona is looking for a move away from the Sunshine Stars in the summer, with the player’s agent touting the talented 23-year-old to a number of European clubs.
Indeed, Arsenal have taken a closer look at the 16-cap international, according to the paper, with the player taking part in a trial with the Emirates Stadium outfit.
Arsene Wenger decided against a move at the time, but the report claims the Gunners have maintained an interest.
Lille and Rennes have also taken an interest in bringing the centre back to France, but Newcastle United now lead the chase for his signature, according to the paper.
And, as well as having to beat their transfer rivals for the signature, Magpies chief Pardew will know that getting a work permit for the player is anything but certain, should a fee be agreed.
