David Luiz was Chelsea's hero on Thursday night as his late winner placed the Blues firmly in control of their Europa League semi-final tie with FC Basel, but there could have been a different turn of events had the Brazilian received a red card for a nasty looking challenge.
The Chelsea centre-back received only a booking for a dangerous lunge on Basel's Phillip Degen, with Luiz clattering into the former Liverpool man halfway up his shin.
Luiz brandished his studs as Degen felt the full force of his opponent's boot, but the Blues star escaped serious sanction when replays suggested he should have been given his marching orders by the referee.
The scores were level at 1-1 at the point of contact between the pair, but Luiz provided Chelsea with a potentially decisive victory only 10 minutes latter when he fired in a free-kick just moments before the final whistle.
Basel, should however, shoulder a portion of the blame for Luiz's winner, with a poorly assembled wall allowing his shot to creep through, before Yann Sommer failed to effectively deal with the ball.
Chelsea host the Swiss side at Stamford Bridge next Thursday knowing Basel must score at least twice if they are to reach the final in Amsterdam in May.
