Brian McDermott insists he does not want his side to replicate anyone else’s style of football, ahead of Brighton’s visit to Elland Road at the weekend.

The ex-Reading boss was asked whether adopting Brighton’s aesthetically pleasing approach was something he wanted to implement.

But McDermott told the official Leeds website: “The style of football I want to replicate is Leeds United.”

“I’ve no interest in replicating anyone’s style of football but ours. We are a big club and we don’t need to replicate anyone’s style,” he said.

Despite United’s Championship status being guaranteed, the Berkshire-born gaffer has no intention of letting his players ease off during the remaining two fixtures.

“I always think the last game of the season at home is so important to give the fans a good send off so they are looking forward to coming back because we need this place full next season,” he said.

The west Yorkshire club are currently 13 in the table, but will finish in the top half should they win their last two matches.th

Although McDermott’s short-term target was to oversee Leeds’ survival, next season the club expect to be challenging for promotion.

And the former Arsenal midfielder acknowledged the part supporters could play in building some momentum next term.

“We need as many people coming through those turnstiles because I just know, I just sense that if we get going and really give them something to watch they will come and turn up,” he concluded.

Next season marks a decade since Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League, but they have always retained substantial crowds – even when languishing in League One.
