On paper, a League One showdown between Brentford and Doncaster doesn’t sound like a bona fide thriller - but that’s just what it turned out to be as events unfolded in the dying seconds at Griffin Park.

2nd placed Doncaster and 3rd placed Brentford went into the final game of the season knowing that a win would give them promotion via the last automatic spot, while the other would have to go through the agony of the play-offs. All week long the build-up to the hotly-anticipated game had been tense.

Of course it turned out to be a tight affair but ultimately lacking in quality and drama – that was until, in the last minute of the game, all hell broke loose. With the scoreline at 0-0, Brentford were awarded a penalty.

A squabble broke out between the Brentford players over who would take the spot-kick, with on-loan Fulham forward Marcello Trotta winning out. He lined up the shot that would put his side into the Championship.

The Italian forward opted for power over precision but only rattled the crossbar. Then much to his despair, Doncaster broke forward with every single Brentford player up the field, and with one of the last kicks of the game, scored on the counter to secure their promotion. Agony for the home side ecstasy for the visitors, who actually went up as champions after Bournemouth's draw with Tranmere.
