Brendan Rodgers singled out Philippe Coutinho for praise after Liverpool’s impressive display against Newcastle at the weekend.

The winger created two goals before nearly scoring a spectacular goal himself as the Reds won 6-0 at St. James' Park.

Rodgers told the official Liverpool website: “He’s had an outstanding performance and people can see why we brought him in.”

“He’s 20 years of age and it fits the culture of what we’re trying to do here.”

Coutinho has settled into Premier League life well following his January transfer from Inter Milan, featuring in most of Liverpool’s matches since then.

But the ex-Swansea chief was eager to alleviate some pressure from the young Brazilian’s shoulders.

“We build up players in the country and put them on a pedestal and then quickly nail them down,” he said.

Saturday’s result still leaves Liverpool five points off neighbours Everton – who currently occupy sixth spot in the table.

Despite this, Rodgers insists the victory in the north-east personifies the style of football he is trying to implement at Anfield.

“It was a wonderful demonstration of what we’re trying to do here,” he concluded. “Offensively, we passed the ball very well first and foremost and we scored six goals, but the balance in our game was good too.”

Liverpool host Everton on Sunday and will be just two points adrift of the Toffees should they win the match.

Their remaining fixtures include a trip to west London, where Fulham await, before concluding the campaign at home to relegated Queens Park Rangers.
