In last year’s campaign, Manchester City narrowly beat Manchester United to capture their first Premier League crown.
Fast-forward a year and with four games remaining, Manchester United reclaimed their Premier League crown - but what do the Red Devils need to do to ensure they retain the title next season?
The obvious key to succeeding season after season is to ensure that you have a strong squad, and each year we witness some big name players arriving in the league, whilst others depart.
Next season, this could certainly be the case for Manchester United, as it has been reported that Sir Alex Ferguson will be handed a £50m transfer budget, and that fee could rise to an astonishing £120m, depending on who he decides to sell.
Some big name players rumoured to be on their way out of Old Trafford include Nani, Anderson, Wayne Rooney and also Javier Hernandez.
So which players would Manchester United need to sign in order to make sure they keep Manchester City along with other potential challengers at bay?
Let’s take a look at three signings Sir Alex Ferguson could - and should - make.
Robert Lewandwoski | Borussia Dortmund
The name which has come up time and time again, Robert Lewandowski is probably the most wanted man in football today. After his four goals against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals, Lewandowski has been closely linked with a move to Bayern Munich, who recently tied up a deal with his current team-mate Mario Gotze.
It is a known fact that Manchester United are interested in the Polish forward, and Lewandowski is clearly open to a move as he mentioned he wanted to see what will happen with either Wayne Rooney or Javier Hernandez before making a decision. Lewandowski’s eye for goal would be a great addition for Manchester United as they continue to build on their already brilliant attack.
James Rodriguez | FC Porto
The major downside to the signing the tricky Colombian winger is his transfer fee, as it could take over £40m to bring the Porto star to Old Trafford. James Rodriguez has been likened to Cristiano Ronaldo, as he possesses the pace, the trickery and an eye for goal.
He is a player that can offer so much to Manchester United and has incredible flair, backed by the endless potential he possesses. He could be the missing piece Manchester United require after selling Cristiano Ronaldo, and replace the exit-bound Nani and Ashley Young. If he joins with Wilfried Zaha, then Manchester United would have some exciting wingers.
Kevin Strootman | PSV Eindhoven
Another name Manchester United have been linked with quite often, Strootman will be a perfect fit for Manchester United. He offers a great deal of versatility in the central midfield and is touted to be the next Roy Keane. He has great vision, his passing is spot-on and he possesses the ability to blister through the opposition.
Manchester United do need a little tweaking in the midfield and I believe Strootman would be a perfect fit for Sir Alex’s set-up.
As well as bringing in new players, Manchester United should also look to their reserves, as they have players who have such bright futures and could be given a lot more playing time next season.
Nick Powell is the real deal; he has already been introduced a couple of times this season and he has shined, scoring in his debut against Wigan Athletic earlier in the season. He has already played in Europe and was handed valuable experience and playing time, although he hasn’t featured as much as everyone wanted him to, coming down to injuries and tactical decisions.
I do expect we will see a lot more of Powell as he will use pre-season as a platform to fight for his case to play a little more first-team football.
Another young player who is seen as having a very bright future, and is equally as talented as Powell; he has the ability to play on both flanks comfortably as well as managing to occupy a more central role. He has great vision and a skilful dribble and could come to provenance in the next couple of years, but I believe we will see more of Januzaj on the bench next season, a similar role to what Nick Powell played in the current campaign.
What do you Manchester United fans think? What do they need to do in order to retain their Premier League crown next season?
