Who's better: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?
Which one of them scores more goals? Who's worth more money? Who's the better team player? Who deserves the Ballon d'Or?
The footballing world is obsessed with comparing these two footballing sensations. Have you ever stepped back and thought about how similar the two men really are? Sure, their football clubs are arch-rivals: but the two attackers are more similar than we think.
First and foremost, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are two of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen. They are future legends and are miles ahead of any other footballer playing today. Ronaldo has won the Ballon d'Or once and finished second to Lionel Messi on three occasions since. The next award will almost certainly go to one of them.
Both men ply their trade in Spain's La Liga. Messi forms the focal point of Barcelona's attack. The left-footer plays in the centre-forward role and links play together as well as scoring goals.
Ronaldo is the go-to man for Real Madrid. The former Manchester United star usually plays down the left wing for the Spanish giants but often switches to the right wing or the striking role with equal effect. Both Messi and Ronaldo have earned the label "Goal Machines". Messi has scored 57 goals for his club in all competitions this season with Ronaldo just behind with
51. Messi has contributed with 15 assists and Ronaldo has put in 10.
Their respective national teams are certainly blessed to have them. Messi captains Argentina and their international aspirations lie almost exclusively with him. The same can be said for Portugal skipper Ronaldo. The winger almost single-handedly carried his nation to the semi-final stage of the Euro's 2012 only to lose to Spain on penalties.
Messi's game is built on ball control, passing, speed, stamina, balance, dribbling and scoring, while Ronaldo's game is built on similar lines. There is no animosity between the two footballers. They have both re-iterated that they have nothing but respect for each other. Instead of nit-picking at their differences, why can't we marvel at their similarities?
After all, we are blessed to see both these phenomenons playing football in their prime.
