Atletico Madrid want Suarez as Chelsea striker target’s replacement

Published 5 Comments

Atletico Madrid are plotting a move for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez as replacement for Radamel Falcao – if the player leaves for Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

The Daily Express cite reports in Spain when claiming that the La Liga outfit attempted to lure Suarez to the Vicente Calderon Stadium two years ago, before talks broke down and the Uruguayan moved to Anfield.

But, Atletico are once again showing an interest in the forward, who has notched 23 goals in the Premier League this season but will miss the rest of the campaign after receiving a 10-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

Brendan Rodgers’ side didn’t struggle in his absence at the weekend however, with Liverpool beating Newcastle 6-0 thanks to two goals from January signing Daniel Sturridge.

The young England striker would take on even more significance if Suarez were to leave Anfield behind at the end of the season, but Liverpool will be expected to do all they can to keep the former Nacional starlet on Merseyside.

A move would also hinge on Falcao’s possible move to Stamford Bridge from Atletico, with a £50million release clause not ‘prohibitive’ for Blues owner Roman Abramovich, according to the report.

Chelsea have been linked with several strikers in recent months, with Fernando Torres and Demba Ba the only senior options available to manager Rafa Benitez.

But, with the Spaniard set to leave west London at the end of the current campaign, transfer plans on the King’s Road may have to be put on hold until his successor has been appointed.
