Manchester City's hopes of signing highly-rated Sampdoria midfielder Pedro Obiang have been dealt a blow, after Juventus emerged as rivals for the player's signature, reports talkSPORT.

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, as Roberto Mancini looks to strengthen his squad when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

Obiang - currently a Spain U21 international - is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Italy at the moment, and is close to making a first-team breakthrough at Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Now, Serie 'A' champions Juventus want to secure the Sampdoria starlet's services, as Antonio Conte seeks to not only reaffirm the Turin club's place at the top of the table, but mount a charge towards the Champions League trophy in 2013/14.

A move to the Etihad Stadium had been mooted but Italian publication Sportmediaset now suggests that Conte has edged ahead of Manchester City boss Mancini in the race to sign Obiang.
