Roman Abramovich has made many mistakes with regard to the hiring and firing of managers, but could letting Lampard go be his biggest mistake yet?

Frank Lampard has established himself as one of the biggest legends in Chelsea's history, - and the idea of the talismanic midfielder leaving the club on a free transfer at the end of the season sounds ludicrous.

However, Blues' owner Roman Abramovich is reluctant to renew the player's £150,000-per-week contract, and this could prove to be a very big mistake.

The idea of Lampard's possible move to another club has been buzzing around since the beginning of the season, as Chelsea's Russian owner feels as though Lampard has contributed more than enough for the London club.

However, at 35 years of age, Lampard has been showing Chelsea fans what they will miss, scoring his 14th goal of the season against Swansea City at the weekend. That takes him up to 201 goals, just one behind Chelsea's legendary all-time top-scorer Bobby Tambling.

He is Chelsea's top goalscorer this season, which is a very impressive task considering that he has been playing as a defensive midfielder.

Besides his goals, Lampard brings many other things to the club which other players cannot, such as amazing vision and pin-point pass accuracy. His ability to distribute the ball is so staggering that the only other Chelsea player that even comes close to his abilities is Juan Mata.

His capability to calmly dispatch a penalty into the back of the net, no matter in what circumstances, is invaluable to the team, as are his powerful shots.

Throughout his career, Lampard has proven to be an all-round player - and has proven his worth to Chelsea this season by means of numerous vital contributions, including numerous assists, a winning brace away to Everton and even a winning goal at home to Arsenal.

Should Abramovich decide to let him walk away, he will find it very difficult to find a replacement capable of Lampard's talents.
