Klopp: Borussia Dortmund can handle pressure of Real Madrid
Champions League semi-final: Juergen Klopp confident his side can hold their nerve against Real Madrid
Borussia Dortmund manager Juergen Klopp is confident that his side won’t stumble when they travel to the Santiago Bernabeu tonight.
The German side face Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final and go into the game with a 4-1 lead.
Asked whether his team will cave in under the pressure in the Spanish capital, Klopp responded: “No, I’m sure we won’t”.
Borussia Dortmund, who are second in the Bundesliga, rested many key players during their victory in the league at the weekend and go into tonight’s fixture without a defeat in their last nine games in all competitions.
So if any team will be feeling the pressure it will be their Spanish counterparts. Unless Real Madrid score at least three unanswered goals they could end the season without a major piece of silverware.
If they bow out of the Champions League tonight their only shot at a major trophy will be the Copa del Rey final in May.
Real Madrid haven’t lost at home this season and will be hoping to maintain that record, using the away goal they scored in Dortmund to secure them the win they need to get through to the final. However the odds on a comeback of this magnitude are small with only one team, Deportivo La Coruna, coming back from 4-1 down when they beat AC Milan 5-4 in 2004.
Klopp, however, is keeping his feet on the ground and is staying focused on the task in hand, telling reporters: “We haven’t achieved anything yet. We are only halfway there.”
