Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are undoubtedly the best two players on the planet; that's proven by the ridiculous amount of goals they score and how important they're to arguably the biggest two clubs in the world.
Many felt that Messi didn't deserve to win his fourth Ballon d'Or, despite all the goalscoring records he broke. Ronaldo's Real Madrid charged towards a record-breaking La Liga victory, leaving poor old Barcelona with only the Copa Del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA World Club Cup to put in their trophy cabinet.
But which of the two superstars has faired better in the 2012/13 season?
Let's start with the least important of the three major trophies available to both players: the Copa Del Rey.
Ronaldo and Real Madrid have come out on top against Barcelona, with Ronaldo's six goals helping Real Madrid knock Barcelona and Messi out in the semi-finals. Real were the much better team over the two legs and Messi's four goals during the competition were not enough for progression to the final.
So far in La Liga, Messi has scored 44 goals and provided 12 assists compared to Ronaldo's 31 goals and eight assists. More importantly, Barcelona sit top of the table with 85 points - a huge 11 points above last year's champions Real Madrid, who sit second with 74 points.
When it comes to head-to-heads, Real Madrid have been the better side with a 2-2 draw at Camp Nou and a 2-1 victory at the Bernebeu. So, overall, Messi and Barcelona have had the better league campaign.
In Europe, however, Ronaldo comes out on top as the tournament's top scorer with 12 goals and the just the one assist compared to Messi's eight goals and three assists.
Both players were unable to prevent humiliation in the semi-finals after being out classed by Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
For either side to progress it would take a miracle, but they both have the advantage of playing at home with the best players in the world on their side. If one was to come out on top and progress to the final it would surely top all of their previous feats, giving that player the advantage when the Ballon d'Or is handed out next year.
As things stand, Messi has had the more successful season. It's up to Ronaldo to prove the world wrong and lead his team to the Champions League final and to victory in the Copa Del Rey.
Who do you think has had the best season? And who do you think is the better player, taking into consideration all their previous achievements?
