Cristiano Ronaldo will have the chance to end Lionel Messi’s dominance as the best player in the world if he can lead Real Madrid to a historic Wembley final.
Ronaldo has been sensational this season especially against Barcelona. In the cup, Ronaldo overshadowed Lionel Messi with two well-taken goals to ensure his side will play Atletico Madrid in a Madrid derby Copa del Rey final.
The Portuguese captain might be seven goals behind his Argentine rival in all competition this season but is four goals clear of Messi in the race for the Champions League top scorer award.
If the were to finish top scorer, it will mean the end of Messi’s reign of four consecutive top scorer finish and perhaps most importantly the end of Messi’s four consecutive Ballon d’Or.
There is no hiding the fact that Lionel Messi is more talented than Ronaldo but Ronaldo is an exceptional talent that in any other era will probably be the best and still deserves at least one more Ballon d’Or award and he will never have a better opportunity than this.
Barcelona were thrashed against German champions Bayern Munich, a team many regard as the best in the competition. Lionel Messi was hugely anonymous and seemed to struggle to adapt to the tempo of the game while Ronaldo struggled too, he managed to still get on the score sheet to give his team more of a fighting chance than their Catalan rivals.
Ronaldo was visibly distraught after Lionel Messi was voted the best player for the fourth time in a row with a few believing the Madrid forward deserved the award. While many will be downhearted, Ronaldo has come back even stronger this season and is now in pole for the prestigious award.
It will be hard not to criticize Messi’s performance in the big games this season especially against Bayern Munich where he was obviously not fit.
However, with Barcelona going into their second leg four goals down with a shaky defence and Madrid going into their second leg three goals down but with a vital away goal, the richest club in the world will fancies their chances more than the Catalan side.
If they both get knocked out, Messi will most likely win his fifth consecutive Ballon d’Or award regardless of what Ronaldo does after. Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s your time to step up.
