Arsenal have had their ups and downs this year. You would have thought after a slow start to the season, the Gunners would be in a difficult position heading into the reamining few fixtures.
However, Arsenal are a club that can turn things around, and despite the pressure they have faced in the last couple of months, they have managed to become even stronger.
Since their defeat back in March against rivals Tottenham Hotspur, they have managed to only drop points against on-form Everton and the Champions of England-Manchester United.
It’s safe to say that Arsenal have done a good job this season to keep their UEFA Champions League hopes alive. Despite their run of form though, there is one massive aspect that could decide as to whether Arsenal are Champions or Europa League competitors next season. That is of course the London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham. All three London squads have a big chance qualifying for the top tournament, and the battle is certainly heating up.
Neither of them can afford to drop points, in any games they have remaining, so the derby really could decide who finishes in that all important top four.
The match at the Emirates this weekend, saw Arsenal battle with Manchester United. The Gunners played a mentally and physically strong team, and they arguably deserved all three points. A one-all draw against United is all well and good, but it was still a valuable two points dropped.
This has allowed Chelsea to move above them into third, and has revived Spurs’ hopes despite their disappointing 2-2 at Wigan. So now, both Chelsea and Spurs have a game in hand over Arsenal. That game in hand is actually that London derby, hence why it will play a big impact on Arsenal’s future.
The Gunners have played well in recent encounters, but they are now technically in a weaker position than their opponents. Spurs have 62 points, whilst Arsenal have 64. If Spurs win the derby, then they have a chance to leap above Arsenal. Chelsea meanwhile have 65 points, so victory for them could potentially see the Gunners and Tottenham scavenging for fourth in the last remaining fixture.
At the moment, it is difficult to say which team Arsenal hope would win. If any of them slip up before the big game, then that may be the reason as to why they have lost out.
All three squads have had a fairly decent run of form, as the last time any of them lost, was back in late March. It is a doubt that any of them will drop points so late on in the season (although Manchester United may question that when the play Chelsea in the near future).
If this is the case, and Chelsea cause upset against United, then the derby could really be the key as to who joins the two Manchester side in the Champions league next season.
The London clash could simply be the biggest and most heated on we have seen to date, and it is a game that can’t come soon enough for any of the three teams.
