Manchester City: In need of summer recruits?

With the title switching from the blue to the red half of Manchester, the Premier League season is effectively over for both Manchester United and Manchester City.

Both clubs have their sights set on winning the title next season. While Sir Alex Ferguson will be relatively content with the squad at his disposal, Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini will look to splash the bank and bring in a few big names to the former champions.

Let's take a look at what positions City need to add to.

1) Centre-back

Although Manchester City do have a fantastic defensive record in the league this season, their defence doesn't look nearly as solid as it was in their title-winning campaign. It is evident that English international Joleon Lescott isn't in favour with City manager Roberto Mancini despite looking solid in the 2011-12 season.

City captain Vincent Kompany has cemented one centre-back spot but his 20-year-old team-mate Matija Nastasic still looks rather uncomfortable at times. With Kolo Toure looking to be on his way out, Mancini will certainly be looking to sign a top centre-back to partner the Belgian skipper.

2) Defensive-midfield

With Yaya Toure, Gareth Barry, Jack Rodwell and Javi Garcia fighting for two spots coupled with James Milner's ability to fill in at the heart of midfield, are Manchester City really in need of another midfielder?

Yaya Toure is one of the Premier League's most talented players. Essentially a defensive midfielder, the 2012 African Player of the Year looks far more dangerous in an attacking role and his manager is likely to use him there more often.

Since signing for the club, Jack Rodwell and Javi Garcia haven't done as well as many expected them to. City's midfield looked stronger before they sold Nigel de Jong. Gareth Barry, although effective, hasn't quite been able to live up to the Dutchman's standards.

3) Wings

Simply put- Manchester City often lack width. They are over-reliant on their full-backs to provide any sort of penetration down the wing.

Although wing play isn't generally their strategy, it does bring a different dimension to their game and they could throw a winger on from the bench rather than a full-back, when the need arises.

Scott Sinclair hasn't been able to replace Adam Johnson and Roberto Mancini is often left with Maicon and Alexander Kolarov when he wants to stretch games.

4) Striker

Only a handful of people who follow the Premier League would bet against City signing a striker this summer. With United's sensational signing of Robin van Persie from Arsenal, City's rivals are at a massive advantage going into the new season.

Mancini will be looking to sign a top striker to match RVP's heroics and put Manchester City well in the hunt for a second Premier League title. There has been a vacancy in the front-line ever since Mario Balotelli signed for AC Milan.

Argentine duo Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero have often struggled for form and fitness this season and Edin Dzeko has been pretty much a hit or a miss. Don't be surprised if the biggest transfer of the summer is the signing of a striker for Manchester City.

In conclusion, Manchester City possess the wealth to bring in a few big names. Whether they can match up to the likes of Robin van Persie remain to be seen, but expect the Etihad stadium to be a busy place this summer.
