Real Madrid almost knocked Borussia Dortmund out of the Champions League on aggregate but they came up short.

They left themselves with too big a mountain to climb in the second leg and it meant the end of their "Decima" dream for another season.

Jose Mourinho has managed to shift talk about his side's disappointing exit to his future after all but confirming that he will be leaving the Spanish champions at the end of the season.

So, what must Real Madrid do in the summer to challenge for silverware next season?

Sign Jürgen Klopp

The Portuguese manager is set to return to Chelsea at the end of the season. Madrid must invest in a manager capable of filling Mourinho’s boots and there is no one better than Klopp.

The German manager has been a huge success at the helm for Borussia Dortmund, leading them to a historic domestic double and a Champions League final after knocking out giants Real Madrid. Klopp encourages his team to play the brand of football that Madrid fans have been craving for years. He will be the perfect man to land the club's elusive 10th European title.

Keep Cristiano Ronaldo

It is an obvious fact, for a team to succeed you need to keep your best players. In recent weeks, Ronaldo has been strongly linked with a move back to Manchester United and even PSG.

The £80m signing has managed to score 197 goals in just 195 appearances for Los Blancos. He is exactly who Real Madrid need in their pursuit of silverware and they must keep him.

Sign a world-class forward

Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain are two hugely talented forwards but their lack of consistently is costing Real Madrid. Los Blancos require a world-class forward like Atletico Madrid's Radamel Falcao as the final piece of the puzzle.

With Ronaldo and another world-class forward playing alongside each other, Real Madrid will be almost impossible to stop next season.

Return of team spirit

Mourinho’s time at Real Madrid led to a division in the dressing room with rumours of a Spanish and Portuguese camp in the squad. Whoever is appointed manager must ensure that the players patch the differences between them or get shipped out.

Real Madrid’s biggest criticism this season is their failure to play as a team. If they want to challenge for silverware next season, they must start playing like a team or future heartache will follow.
