Australia announce squad ahead of Champions Trophy
Australia’s squad for Champions Trophy revealed
Nathan Coulter-Nile and Mitchell Marsh are the only new faces among Australia’s Champions Trophy squad.
Selectors have opted to pick experience for the tournament in England, which is played before the summer’s Ashes series.
All-rounder Coulter-Nile is set to make his 50-over debut for Australia after some outstanding performances in the Ryobi Cup.
Chief selector John Inverarity told Sky Sports: “Coulter-Nile is an emerging cricketer as a fast-medium bowler and explosive lower-order batsman.
“He is also one of the finest fieldsmen in Australian cricket and the energy he brings to his game is impressive.”
Michael Clarke will captain the side during the competition, with George Bailey, Mitchell Johnson, Adam Voges and James Faulkner all featuring in the 15-man squad.
Fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Clint McKay have slight niggles, but are expected to be fit when the tournament begins next month.
“Mitchell Starc and Clint McKay are recovering well from injury and are meeting targets that should ensure their readiness for the tournament,” said Inverarity.
“Both players are integral to our plans and along with Mitchell Johnson, form the core of the limited-overs bowling group.”
Australia have been drawn against hosts England, Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the group stages, with their opening match taking place at Edgbaston on June 8.
The Aussies have won the last two Champions Trophy titles, and will be looking to defend their trophy once again this summer.
