Tottenham Hotspur have opened negotiations with Hatem Ben Arfa over a summer move from Newcastle United, according to reports.

The Daily Express cite speculation on French TV channel Infosport+ when claiming that Spurs are already in talks to bring the 26-year-old to White Hart Lane, despite three crucial matches remaining for the Magpies this season.

Injury problems have affected Ben Arfa's campaign at St. James’ Park this season, with the former Marseille star scoring just three goals in 19 appearances for Alan Pardew’s side.

That hasn’t stopped Liverpool from taking an interest in the player, with the paper claiming Brendan Rodgers is keen on bringing the attacking midfielder to Anfield during the summer transfer window.

PSG have also been linked, but it appears Tottenham Hotspur have stolen a march on their rivals with their apparent negotiations.

Andre Villas-Boas has enjoyed a fine first season at Spurs, and may be able to offer the French international Champions League football is his side manage a top four finish in the Premier League.

Newcastle face a battle to avoid the drop at the wrong end of the table, whilst Liverpool are pushing for a place in the Europa League.
