Coverage of the MLB (Major League Baseball) on British TV has significantly increased since the start of last season.
Of course, compared to the USA, it is still minimal, but it has got many wondering whether MLB could take off in Britain as the NBA and NFL have done in recent years.
Baseball is a huge hit in the U.S and is often considered as their national sport. It's also very popular in surrounding areas such as Mexico, Cuba and of course Canada, with the Toronto Blue Jays being Canada's sole representative in the Major Leagues.
British support for Basketball and American Football teams seems to be growing each year yet a person with a more than basic level of understanding for baseball is a rare occurrence.
But why, with America and Britain being so similar in various ways, is Baseball unknown territory for the vast majority of British sports fans?
Maybe the slow pace. Maybe the occasional lack of attendance. Yet, these are characteristics of some of the sports we love and watch here in Britain.
So, could it take off?
Well, with it being so popular in the U.S there is no reason why it can’t. Only the other week did the Boston Red Sox's streak of sell out games come to an end against the Baltimore Orioles. 820 games in a row were sold out at Boston's beautiful and historic Fenway Park, that's how popular it is over there.
A little more coverage and it could certainly become as popular as NBA or NFL.
What's not to love? Surely a 162 game season is incredibly appealing to sports fans. MLB teams start a gruelling 162 game season in April after Spring training and conclude the season around the end of September with the possibility of entering the post season, with very few days off in between.
Games are, quite often, exhilarating. A game can go long periods of time without anything happening and then, in an instant, a home run is hit and as a viewer you're gripped to the action. In this way it's fairly similar to football.
The post-season also provides some magnificent ballgames, which would appeal to any sports fan. The format provides a platform, making the sport completely unpredictable - it is anyone's guess as to who wins the World Series (the final) and take Baseball's most prestige crown.
These are only a few of the reasons that make baseball what it is - a great sport. If a little more interest was taken, it could catch on in Britain and our sport fanatics would support the Major League's baseball teams in the same way they support the NBA or NFL.
