Manchester United prepare four-year contract offer for Wayne Rooney

Manchester United will reportedly offer Wayne Rooney the opportunity to extend his stay with the club for another four years, amid speculation about the striker's future with the club.

According to, Manchester United are readying a financial package for Rooney and the 27-year-old is expected to put pen to paper on a new deal over the summer months.

Speculation mounted that Manchester United were planning to get rid of Rooney during the summer transfer window after he was omitted from the starting XI for the Champions League last 16 second leg clash with Real Madrid at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson, however, dismissed suggestions the club were considering selling the England international, claiming he would receive the offer of an extension two his current contract, which has two years left to run.

Doubts about Rooney's future have persisted, however, with Paris Saint-Germain touted as potential suitors, while reports of a swoop for Robert Lewandowski at the end of the season have further questioned the position of the former.

Rooney, though, remains a valued member of Ferguson's squad, and Nike are reported to have played a role in convincing the club that a lucrative new deal would be the way to go come the end of the season.

The England forward has made 400 appearances for the Premier League champions since joining from Everton in 2004, during which time he has found the net on 197 occasions.
