Arsenal forward Theo Walcott believes he has shown enough to prove that he can play in the striker role - something he has wanted to do for some time now.

The Englishman announced at the start of the season that the reason behind not signing a new contract with the club is because he wants to be used as a striker more than a winger, and ever since then he has been given opportunities to shine upfront for the Gunners.

Arsenal's usual striker is Olivier Giroud, who has bagged 17 goals in his debut season, but he is suspended after being sent off against Fulham a fortnight ago and that means he will miss the matches against Queens Park Rangers and Wigan Athletic.

Giroud also missed the tie with Manchester United but manager Arsene Wenger chose Lukas Podolski ahead of Walcott to fill the striker's role.

Walcott is Arsenal's leading goalscorer this season with 19 goals - his best return since joining the club - and he believes he has proven that he can be used as a striker rather than just a winger.

“I played a few games there and I would like a few more towards the end of the season,"  Walcott is quoted as saying in the Evening Standard. “I scored a lot of my goals this season when playing upfront, so I have shown what I can do and it is up to the manager to do what he sees is best.

“I am sure another chance will come.

“I set a 20-goal target for the season, but the biggest goal for me is to help Arsenal finish third or fourth.”
