Manchester United should break the bank in order to lure Jack Wilshere away from Arsenal during the summer transfer window, according to former Gunner Stewart Robson.

Wilshere had missed almost 18 months of competitive football before his Arsenal return earlier this season, but the 21-year-old has been able to re-establish himself as one of the most accomplished midfielders in the Premier League.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are reported to be in the transfer market for a creative midfielder this summer, and Robson believes Wilshere would be an ideal acquisition for Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I'd test Arsenal's resolve. It's in midfield where [Manchester United] have been struggling - I'd go and get Wilshere," the former Arsenal midfielder told ESPN Press Pass.

"I've seen a lot of him - I think he can be one of the world's best; he's certainly one of England's best players.

"If I was Sir Alex Ferguson, I'd be thinking : they've already got Robin van Persie, can they go and get Jack Wilshere?"

Manchester United are reported to have identified central midfield as a key area for reinforcement this summer, with Paul Scholes potentially set to retire for the second time at the end of the season.

The Premier League champions are already reported to have made an approach for Nemanja Matic of Benfica, while they have also been linked with Juventus' Aturo Vidal.
