With their club captain and long serving centre back Carles Puyol coming to the end of his lengthy and succesful carrer, Barcelona have been known to be seeking a replacement at the heart of their defence.
Many names have been banded around throughout the season, and as Barcelona struggled massively without Puyol against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, the subject of a replacement has become a big talking point again. Especisally for Chelsea fans, who continue to see their Brazilian international David Luiz linked to the Catalan giants.
With interim manager Rafa Benitez choosing to leave John Terry on the bench mostly since his return from injury, Luiz has taken the responsibility of being the commanding man around the Chelsea defence, either at centre back or just infront of the back four. And besides his consistent performances in front of the Chelsea goal, he has also been finding the net again. His goals from distance took the Premier League by storm when he joined the Stamford Bridge club, and he has found his shooting boots again, significantly so against Basel in the Europa League.
And his form sees him being linked to the Camp Nou once again, and it seems as if Barca are ready to launch a reported £35million bid for the 25-year-old in the summer, having dropped their interest in the previous window.
Luiz is known to be happy with life in London and at Chelsea currently, but this could change depending on who arrives to take over from Benitez for next season. It would be hard for any incoming manager to part with Luiz given his fine form this season, and what he has to Chelsea for many years to come. But should Barcelona have an offer accepted for the Brazilian, Luiz may find it difficult to turn down should he be assured a starting place in the infamous colours of the Catalan club.
