Tottenham boss hints at summer spending spree
Tottenham transfer news: AVB says he will have money to spend in the summer
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has hinted he will have funds available to him in the summer – regardless of whether he can guide the club to Champions League qualification this season.
Spurs currently sit in 5th place in the Premier League – two points behind rivals Arsenal who occupy the final qualification spot but with a game in hand.
That game comes against Chelsea, who are also chasing a Champions League spot, on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge - a fixture which could go some way to deciding the make-up of the top four.
But with three games remaining, Villas-Boas says his ability to spend in the summer and bring in new players doesn’t hinge on whether his side qualify for European club football’s elite competition.
When asked if his transfer budget hinged on a top-four spot the former Chelsea boss said: ‘No. At the moment our future must be analysed in only one direction.
‘For us, the objective is always to improve the team and for that to happen either we have Champions League money to make it easier, or we have to invest and risk a bit more.
‘But the objective is always to better what you did last season. We have to have one direction only.’
Villas-Boas appears to have a battle on his hands to keep hold of star player Gareth Bale if Spurs miss out on Champions League qualification, although he maintains the Welshman will stay at White Hart Lane.
The 35-year-old can go a long way to avoiding that with victory against his former side on Wednesday, with fixtures against Stoke and Sunderland to come.
