It was another dramatic weekend of action across Europe as the 2012/13 season draws to a close, with promotion ecstasy and relegation agony confirmed for teams all over the continent.

With the Premier League title race well over, all eyes in England were on the Championship. Watford and Hull were duelling for an automatic spot to the Premier League, while play-off and relegation spots were still to be confirmed.

This brilliant blog from the Guardian chronicles the twists and turns of final day in the Championship – which included 16 minutes of injury time and a rookie goalkeeper making his debut and conceding two goals to fatally damage his side’s promotion hopes after injuries to two senior shotstoppers.

The best goals of the day came courtesy of Watford’s Almen Abdi (below) and Blackpool’s Matt Phillips, who opened the scoring for his side against Bolton, who then fought back from 2-0 down to claim a 2-2 draw – only for the Trotters to miss out on goal difference. What a day it was.

Back up in the Premier League and it was a much more sedate affair – livened up by David Luiz’s smile on Sunday.

Tottenham’s Gareth Bale provided another goal for the highlight reel with a rocket that earned his side a vital 1-0 win against Southampton at White Hart Lane.

While in Holland and Italy, Ajax and Juventus wrapped up their respective league titles – the Italians in particular celebrated in style -  in Portugal all eyes were on Moreirense v Braga where Nabil Ghilas slammed home a sensational bicycle kick.

Over to Germany and the usually jovial Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp went eye-to-eye with Bayern Munich sport director Mathias Sammer during the two side’s 1-1 draw which proved to be a tasty appetiser for their Champions League final showdown later this month.

Saving the best for last, and in Belgium, Lokeren goalkeeper Boubacar Barry managed to knock himself out on the post trying to save a shot against Club Brugge. What a weekend….
