Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United midfield target to sign for Chelsea
Chelsea transfer news: Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic has also been linked with Manchester United
Jose Mourinho is planning to make former Chelsea midfielder - and reported Manchester United target - Nemanja Matic his first summer signing, if he agrees a managerial return to west London, reports the Daily Mirror.
The 24-year-old has established himself as an integral part of the Benfica first-team, since arriving in Portugal as part of the deal that saw David Luiz move to Stamford Bridge in 2011.
Matic made just three senior appearances for the Blues after signing from Kovice in a £1.5million deal in 2009, moving on again only 18 months into his four-year Chelsea contract.
However, the Serbia international has made great strides at Estadio da Luz under current manager Jorge Jesus, prompting admiring glances from the likes of Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Daily Express reported last week that Manchester United are weighing up a sizeable bid to bring Matic to Old Trafford, who has scored four goals in 34 appearances for Benfica this season.
However, the newly crowned Premier League champions will now face competition from Chelsea, after the Real Madrid manager's recent recommendation.
Chelsea fans will have the chance to take a closer look at Matic when Rafa Benitez's side take on Benfica in the Europa League final in Amsterdam on May 15.
The interim boss will be looking to end his temporary spell in charge in style by lifting a major European trophy, which would make Chelsea the first club in history to win the Champions League and Europa League in back-to-back seasons.
