Real Madrid have had a slightly dissapointing season as they have failed to mount a title challenge and they have again been beaten in the Champions League semi-finals.

And as many sources reiterate, the potential departure of Ronaldo could see Madrid slump even further next seaon.

Ronaldo, according to the Daily Mail, is looking for a way out of Real Madrid, a move which could leave Real Madrid without a significant goal threat.

With Ronaldo contributing thirty-one goals and eight assists this season, around 40% of Real Madrid's total goal tally, would Real Madrid find themselves staring into the face of mediocracy? One thing is for sure, if he does go, it puts an incredible amount of emphasis on Florentino Perez to acquire the services of Gareth Bale. If they were to get in the region of £70 million pounds for the Portuguese superstar, an offer near to that, would surely tempt Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to part with his Welsh maestro.

In terms of Real Madrid's other players, they have been the difference between last seasons La Liga winning side and this seasons far less successful campaign. Although Mesut Ozil and Karim Benzema have at times been dangerous, their perpetual inconsistency this season has often coincided with an over-reliance on Cristiano Ronaldo. Other attacking players such as Di Maria, Modric and particularly Higuain have continuously let themselves down, and despite Modric's recent return to form, he was voted the worst transfer of the season in Spain.

With Atletico Madrid seemingly closing the gap between the rest of the league and Real Madrid and Barcelona, albeit with Falcao, the departure of Ronaldo could perhaps level the playing field and bring a competitiveness back to La Liga which hasn't been seen since the likes of Valencia and Villarreal were actual title contenders.

One thing is for sure, if the do sell him, they will need reinforcements, and quality ones at that.
