Over the years, some fairly average players have managed to get a game or two for the senior England team.
But who are the most undeserving of this privilege? Here are five of the worst ever players to play for England.
Scott Carson | Caps: 4
With the stage set for England’s crucial Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia, manager Steve McClaren caused a surprise by selecting the former Liverpool player in goal for his competitive international debut.
However, in a heartbreaking moment, Niko Kranjcar wound up from nye-on 30 yards and unleashed a pot-shot which bounced off Carson into the goal.
Jay Bothroyd | Caps: 1
A decent Championship striker at best, the Sheffield Wednesday loanee had his most prolific campaign to date in the 2010/11 season in the Championship, with 20 goals in all competitions during which he was rewarded with a substitute appearance at home to France, making little to no impact.
Emile Heskey | Caps: 62
It is truly staggering that the powerful striker amassed such a large number of games, scoring just seven goals, only three of which were in competitive games.
Now plying his trade in Australia he retired from the international game in 2010 following a somewhat unsuccessful World Cup campaign.
Francis Jefffers | Caps: 1
Jeffers’ career has probably been one of the biggest ant-climaxes in recent times. After a £8m move to Arsenal from Everton, he only ever scored four goals for the Gunners before being loaned out three times and eventually sold on a free.
Now playing for Accrington Stanley, he is a far-cry from the fresh-faced 16-year-old who impressed with Everton all those years ago.
David Nugent | Caps: 1
A one-cap one-goal wonder, Nugent, who at the time was playing for Championship club Preston North End, scored a tap-in from no more than a foot, but was never included in another England squad.
Now at Leicester City he has failed to make shockwaves, but has had another solid campaign.
What do you think? Who else did not deserve a place in the England team?
