Following Fabricio Coloccini’s impressive return from injury in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at West Ham United, teammate Steven Taylor believes the Newcastle skipper is vital to the club staying in the Premier League this season.

Having missed 12 consecutive games prior to the clash at Upton Park with a back injury, the Argentinian’s commanding display at the heart of the Toon defence handed the club their first clean sheet away from home since January.

And Taylor is just relieved to have his centre-half partner back in action in the black and white shirt.

Talking to the Sunderland Echo, Taylor said, “We have a great partnership together.

“The defence against West Ham was very good along with the midfield. We needed that. The fans wanted a response from the Liverpool game, and they got one.”

The Magpies were given a further boost last night (Tuesday), when Wigan Athletic failed to take advantage of their game in hand, losing 3-2 at home to Swansea City.

“We can only concentrate on ourselves,” added Taylor.

“In the past two years Wigan seem to do well at this time of the season, but we can’t rely on what they do. We just need to focus on ourselves. If we get three points, it could help put this to bed and move us up the table.”

Newcastle remain level on points with Norwich and rivals Sunderland, and three points ahead of the Latics, who occupy the final relegation spot. QPR and Reading have already been sent down to the Npower Championship.
