Well established as one of the Premier League’s oldest members, Aston Villa are currently teetering on the edge of relegation.

After narrowly avoiding the drop last season, The Villains once again face a battle to retain their top-flight status in what promises to be a tight closing fortnight of games.

Forty points is usually considered the amount needed to be classed as ‘safe’. However, as of yet, Paul Lambert's side are yet to secure their Premier League status.

However, after Wigan's defeat last night, Villa look in pole position to remain in England's top division.

If Villa are to push on next season, then in an ideal world, Villa would hold on to all of their talented youngsters, recruit a few new players and start the season in fine fettle. But with larger, wealthier and altogether more successful clubs entering the market this may not happen.

Players such as Andreas Weimann, Christian Benteke and Matthew Lowton are likely to be courted by the big clubs during the summer transfer window and if the right offer comes along - well who knows - Aston Villa could end up with even more problems than the ones flying in left-right-and-centre this season.

It is vital that the board show their resolve and don’t give in to other clubs’ demands without a fight, otherwise they might not be in the Premier League for another season - that’s if they survive this time around.
