Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger has today confirmed he wants to see out his contract at Anfield.

The news is key for Brendan Rogers with Jamie Carragher poised to retire and question marks surrounding the futures of Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates.

The tattooed-sleeved defender told the Independent: "I still have three years left and I intend to fulfil them, there are always rumours, but who is creating them? I don't know.

"It is not a bad thing to be linked with top clubs but you have to take 70 per cent (of the speculation) off and then you have the reality."

Jamie Carragher's departure at the end of the season will leave a substantial hole in the defence, so Agger plans to fill it despite the paper rumours of a move away from the club. Barcelona and Manchester City were thought to have been interested in the centre-back over the past 12 months.

Agger has paid tribute to his retiring centre-back partner, admitting his game has developed by working alongside 'the best' on the training field.

"Jamie speaks for himself. To be at that level for that long, it's not impossible but really close. You learn from every single player you play with in training. If you want to be the best you have to learn from the best," he added.

"I don't think you have to replace him because every footballer is not the same. Every person is different. When someone steps down, someone else has to take over. I play the way I do. I am the person I am and I'm doing the things I'm doing and I won't really change.

Agger continued: "I am taking the responsibility I need to take. I enjoy it and there are a few players who are taking a lot of responsibility."

The centre-half is up for the challenge and feels 'consistency' is what the Merseyside Reds lacked this season.

Although Steven Gerrard was a consistent regular, the England international will have surgery on his shoulder which will rule him out for the last two games against Fulham and QPR.

So 'Carra' and 'Stevie G' may have played their last competitive game together, meaning an end of era at Anfield. Gerrard has amazingly not missed a league game this season, so maybe the Liverpool physio has run out of the magic muscle tape which has kept the midfielders arm together.
