David Luiz has become a fan’s favourite as well as a cult hero at Stamford Bridge. His silky Brazilian skills and darting forward runs are not typically the characteristics you would find in a centre back.

David Luiz signed for Chelsea from Benfica in the 2011 January transfer market for a reported fee of £21.3 million. The prospect Chelsea having a new Brazilian centre half since the departure of Alex excited Chelsea fans, and Luiz has not disappointed thus far.

Physically the defender is strong. He is also tall at 6'2 and seems to have the qualities necessary for a footballer playing at centre half. Even though the Chelsea number four has a variety of tools in his belt that can be recognised as moments of magic, he also has the powers to create disaster.

Under the managerial roles of Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Di Matteo, David Luiz has received a high amount of criticism for his unpredictable style of play.

However, since the arrival of Rafa Benitez, David Luiz has transformed himself into a world-class defender. In recent weeks Rafa has placed Luiz into midfield giving him the option of moving freely around the pitch without the worry of leaving a hole in the centre of defence, which was the case before.

David Luiz has scored a number of incredible goals since joining Chelsea, most recently a sublime effort against FC Basel in the Europa League semi final first and second legs. His extraordinary goals have ranged from all over the pitch either from open play as well as from free kicks..

Luiz caused outrage in Chelsea's 1-0 victory over Manchester United in May 2013. After being kicked at by fellow countryman and United defender, Rafael, Luiz appeared to smile while not in the views of the match officials. This provoked Sir Alex Ferguson to make his thoughts public and signal Luiz out as a man without sportsmanship.

Luiz has a tendency to draw fouls from opponents by driving his elbow into their chest upon contact angering the opponent and almost always been awarded free kicks.

David Luiz's versatility is a major positive of his game not only for Chelsea, but also Brazil. Having the option for a player of such high quality been able to play at both centre defence and centre midfield is a major boost for both club and country.

Taking everything into account, David Luiz is an amazing talent. His temperament needs tuning but no one can deny that the man is skilful footballer. Hopefully the predicted future Chelsea captain will dedicate himself to the Chelsea cause and sign on for life.
