Everton not big enough for Roberto Martinez, says Whelan

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan believes his current manager Roberto Martinez is 'too big' to join a club like Everton after ongoing speculation links the Spaniard as the possible replacement for Manchester United-bound David Moyes.

The manager's merry-go-round looks set to start as Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has announced his retirement from football and that will set off a changes around several clubs.

David Moyes is the strong favourite to replace Ferguson and that means a position will open up at Goodison Park and Wigan's manager is the current favourite to replace Moyes.

However, Whelan doesn't think Martinez would leave Wigan for Everton as he doesn't feel their club is big enough for his manager.

Wigan are preparing for their FA Cup final with Manchester City at the weekend and will then turn their attention back to the race for survival as it looks like they are finally going to be relegated to the Championship after suffering a massive blow mid-week against Swansea City.

Despite the club seemingly going down, Whelan still believes that Martinez would not leave Wigan for Everton.

Whelan told reporters: "It's a battle that I will lose and Wigan will lose, I've no question on that.

"But would Roberto choose to go to Everton or would he wait for one of the really big clubs?

"I'm not degrading Everton in any way, shape or form - they're a great club with great supporters - but is Everton regarded as one of the top European clubs? Well, unfortunately they're not."

If Whelan is correct, it is thought Everton would turn to; Swansea's Michael Laudrop, Mark Hughes or Celtic's Neil Lennon.
