Chelsea should target Real Madrid star
Chelsea opinion: Xabi Alonso would be a perfect fit at Stamford Bridge
Xabi Alonso, 31-year-old Spanish international and Real Madrid star could be heading back to the Premier League.
In his four seasons with Real Madrid, Alonso has tallies an impressive total of 31 assists as a holding midfielder. He runs well and can help supply the necessities from a defending position.
As a former Liverpool player, Xabi Alonso was once heavily criticised by current Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez. However, Blues management is looking to replace Benitez, perhaps with current Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho won two Premier League titles with Chelsea in his past years with the Stamford Bridge outfit. He is undoubtedly the fan's favourite to return the Chelsea.
Alonso has enjoyed working under Mourinho, despite their UEFA Champions League falters against Borussia Dortmund. Chelsea are in need of help in the defensive midfielder department, as long as starlet Oriol Romeu remains out of action with a knee injury and Frank Lampard is not offered a new contract to stay at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso made his move to La Liga for £30 million from Liverpool. He previously played for Real Sociedad before a move to Anfield.
A move to Arsene Wenger’s side would solidify an already top-notch midfield for the Gunners. With the injury-prone Jack Wilshere in the central midfield, Arsenal is probably looking for a midfielder that could play at a constant rate. Arsenal has many wing-style midfielders, notably Russia international Andrey Arshavin, teenager Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Aaron Ramsey. Not to mention, Santi Cazorla has been one of the most consistent players in the Premier League this season. Unfortunately for Arsenal, if they were to buy Xabi Alonso, then they would need to sell one of their promising young players in the midfield.
Ultimately, it would be more of a gain for Chelsea if they were to purchase Alonso because they are in need of quality defensive midfielders. Their style of having two holding midfielders would be more suitable for a player such as Xabi Alonso. Arsenal would have no need for such a player in their starting XI.
