Following Tuesday’s tense press conference, Real Madrid have decided to cancel their Friday press conference in an attempt to reduce the speculation surrounding the club lately.
The press conference was supposed to be the pre-match call before their away tie to Espanyol on Saturday.
Madrid are concerned that the negativity and tensions surrounding the club could dampen their chances of claiming the Copa del Rey trophy against bitter rivals Atletico Madrid on the 17th of May.
The club were keen to turn the focus away from want-away manager Jose Mourinho who hit back at fellow Portuguese Pepe, who had criticized the ex Chelsea manager about his comments toward club legend Iker Casillas. Mourinho also had another dig at the Spanish captain, claiming he preferred Diego Lopez’s playing style.
He also chose to reply to Andres Iniesta quotes. The Spanish midfielder backed fellow Spaniard Iker Casillas and Mourinho suggested that the Catalan giants are a one-man team, claiming Barcelona would struggle to achieve any meaningful success without the Argentine, Lionel Messi.
This is the third time that Madrid have decided to cancel their pre-match press conference under Jose Mourinho. The first two came as a result of an on going war with ex Sporting Gijon manager Manuel Preciado. Mourinho famously criticized the manager for fielding a weakened side against eventual champions Barcelona in 2011.
Mourinho’s time at Madrid seems to be in its final stages and having failed to win their tenth European title, he seems to be leaving Madrid on a sour note.
