Villas-Boas: Gareth Bale should sign new contract
Tottenham transfer news: Andre Villas-Boas wants Gareth Bale to sign new deal
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas says he hopes that Gareth Bale will commit his future to the club, but insists he remains 'calm' about speculation surrounding the future of the coveted Wales international.
Bale has been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid following his most potent goalscoring season to date, during which the 23-year-old won both the PFA and FWA Player of the Year awards.
Spurs are reported to be keen to tie Bale down to an improved deal in order to keep him out of the clutches of Europe's most prominent clubs, despite the Welsh winger only signing a new contract at the end of the last campaign.
Villas-Boas now hopes Bale will be offered another contract during the summer, and says a pay increase would be just reward for the season the former Southampton trainee has had for Spurs.
"It would be good [if he signs a new contract]," the Spurs boss told reporters.
"We are very calm about all the speculation. He deserves it after the season he had. It would be excellent reward for the season he has had (if he got a new deal)."
Bale's future at White Hart Lane may yet hinge on Tottenham's ability to secure a place in the Champions League for next season, and Spurs could see their hopes of a top four finish practically ended at Stoke on Sunday.
