Arsenal get Serie A rival for midfield target

Arsenal could be about to lose out on transfer target Josip Ilicic, as his club have hinted at doing a deal with Napoli.

According to talkSPORT, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is keen on the Slovenia international and could be one of the Emirates Stadium club’s options for the summer.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to do some serious shopping this summer as improved commercial income will give Wenger a significant fund to spend.

Finishing inside the Premier League’s top four will be crucial for Arsenal’s summer plans, as Champions League football will be a big factor in attracting new stars.

It may not be so crucial if they make an attempt to sign Ilicic, however, as Palermo look as though they are about to be relegated from Serie A.

Relegation would increase the need to sell and any Arsenal ambitions to poach Ilicic will have been hit after Palermo revealed a close relationship with Napoli.

"Ilicic is a great player, but he can be inconsistent," Perinetti is quoted as saying in the report.

"Napoli? There is a good rapport between the clubs, but I can say for the moment there are no negotiations taking place for Ilicic.

"If they did decide to make an offer, it would be a pleasure for us to deal with them."
