Barcelona crowned La Liga champions
Barcelona secured their fourth title in five years on Saturday after Real Madrid failed to beat Espanyol
Barcelona are champions of Spain for the fourth time in five years courtesy of a Real Madrid draw at Espanyol on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid went into the clash against Barcelona’s local rivals Espanyol at Cornella-El Prat knowing that only a win will prolong Barcelona’s title celebration - at least for one night - but they only succumbed to a disappointing 1-1 draw, with want-away striker Gonzalo Higuain equalising for Los Blancos after Christian Stuani’s opener for the hosts.
The title is Barcelona’s 22nd in their illustrious 113-year history and their fourth in the last five seasons after Madrid ended their three year successive win following a record breaking season for Los Blancos last season.
Barcelona made the best ever start to a La Liga season and ahead of their tie against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon, Barcelona have amassed 88 points, 12 short of the 100 mark, a record tally set by Madrid last season.
Madrid, meanwhile, have 81 points and with just two games to spare, they cannot overtake Barcelona at the top of the table.
Tito Vilanova’s men have also netted 105 goals in 34 games, 20 short of the best-ever tally. Lionel Messi is the top scorer for the Catalan side in the league with an unprecedented 46 goals in just 31 appearances this season.
They have lost just two games in the league, against Real Sociedad and Real Madrid but are unbeaten at home this season.
Barcelona can reflect on another successful campaign in Vilanova's first season in charge, despite elimination from the Copa del Rey and Champions League in the semi-final stages of the competitions.
They will face Atletico in their first game since been crowned champions on Sunday.
