Peterborough United defender Gabriel Zakuani has asked to leave the club following their recent relegation from the Championship to League One.
The club offered the defender a three-year deal to stay at London Road, but the star rejected the contract and demanded to be put on the transfer list, something the club have reluctantly accepted.
The DR Congo international has spent five years at Peterborough and has made over 150 appearances for the club. In that time, he has become a fan-favourite and the news of his departure will sadden the Posh faithful.
He has also been a key part in their recent success and has won the Peterborough Player of the Year award on multiple occasions.
Zakuani joined Posh back in 2009 after joining from Premier League outfit Fulham for a fee estimated to be around £500,000.
The news comes after Peterborough were relegated following their final day defeat to Crystal Palace, and Darren Ferguson's side will now have to face up to the reality of losing one of their key players having slipped out of The Championship.
The defender made the following statement to the club's official website: "I have spent five very happy years at Peterborough, but I am a very ambitious person and I want to play as high as I can in my career.
"My international career is very important to me and it was a real honour to represent my country in the African Cup of Nations.
"I want to continue playing for my country and feel I have to give myself every chance of being selected by the national coach.
"I have always given 100 per cent for the cause and this was a very difficult decision for me to make."
