Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes Daniel Sturridge has the potential to become England’s finest centre-forward.

Sturridge, who previously played for Manchester City and Chelsea, netted a hat-trick at the weekend in Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Fulham to take his tally to 11 goals in 15 appearances since departing London for Merseyside in January.

And Rodgers feels the 23-year-old can become England’s best, if he continues to progress the way he is doing on Merseyside.

Talking to Talksport, the Anfield manager said: “He’s 23 now, and he’s had some big moves. He’s got bags of potential and he’s showed that.

“I worked with him at Chelsea and I knew how difficult it was going to be for him there to get in-front of the likes of Didier Drogba. But when he did play his goals to games ratio was very good. It was the same at Bolton, where he scored eight in 13 games.

“For him it’s about the next three years, trying to play between 40 and 50 games a season, and if he does that he’ll certainly get over 20 goals a season.”

“And if he does that then England have got a top, top striker."

Having struggled for opportunities at his previous sides, Sturridge admits he’s relished the chance to play regularly under Rodgers, and is reaping the rewards on the pitch.

turridge explained:S “I’m relaxed, I’m enjoying my football and when a manager believes in you and gives you an opportunity you have to go out there and work as hard as you can and, if you can do that, then your abilities will shine through.”

"When I played there [at Chelsea] I didn’t play two games as a striker. I played one game, I'd score two goals and then I would be out.”

"At Chelsea I didn’t have an opportunity. But it’s the past for me now, I hold no grudges against the club."

Sturridge will hope to improve on his recent goal-scoring exploits when Liverpool host QPR on Sunday’s Premier League finale at Anfield.

Harry Redknapp's side have already been relegated, whilst the Reds have little to play for with seventh-place already secured. Rodgers' side are five points behind rivals Everton and are unable to catch their great rivals.
