Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao was left red-faced after taking his place on the substitutes' bench for the weekend clash against Espanyol, not knowing that he'd in fact been dropped from the first-team squad.

To the amusement of his team-mates, the Portuguese international - who was sporting his full kit, boots and shin pads - sat down beside reserve goalkeeper Iker Casillas, blissfully unaware of what was about to unfold.

It wasn't long before the 25-year-old was made aware of the embarrassing mix-up, prompting him to make a swift exit from the dug-out area.

As he shuffled across the technical area, the legitimate subs burst out into uncontrollable hysterics, with Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho even struggling to contain his laughter after joining in on the joke at Coentrao's expense.

The jovial atmosphere was short-lived, though, as the visitors were held to a 1-1 draw at Estadi Cornella-El Prat, which handed rivals Barcelona the Primera Division title following their 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid the following evening.
