Monaco are believed to be close to signing Atletico Madrid's Colombian striker Radamel Falcao.

The Colombian is set to land a salary increase if he decides to join the club who have been promoted back to the top flight of French football and are bankrolled by a Russian billionaire.

So, should Falcao sign for Monaco?

After the striker's explosive final season with FC Porto, in which he led the Portuguese side to an unprecedented treble, the stage was set for the Colombian to challenge the world’s best players.

Europe’s finest clubs were fighting for his signature but Falcao decided to join Madrid’s second biggest club Atletico. They are hardly a small side but Falcao could certainly have done better - moving to somewhere like Manchester City or Chelsea, for example.

Fast-forward two years and Falcao is about to repeat such a move to Monaco.

Falcao needs Champions League football, something which has eluded him in the past few years having failed to secure Champions League football with Atletico Madrid until this season. So a move to Monaco will mean Falcao will have to wait at least one more season without playing in Europe’s elite competition.

The likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United have all been linked to Falcao, so a move to Monaco will seem unreasonable in terms of his footballing career, especially with Europe's elite clubs chasing after him.

Falcao has not agreed a move to Monaco as of yet, so he might decide to decline a move to France.

Either way, Falcao needs Champions League football next season.
