Manchester United: Will Cristiano Ronaldo return without Ferguson?
Manchester United opinion: Cristiano Ronaldo may not be so keen to return to Old Trafford now Sir Alex Ferguson has announced his retirement
Last Wednesday morning was the day Manchester United fans and players had been dreading - Sir Alex Ferguson announced his decision to retire after managing the club for 26 years.
With an outstanding winning record, tactful transfer signings and sheer devotion, the time has finally come for the Scot to put his feet up and pass on the role of managing the great club to compatriot David Moyes.
Not only were the current players quick to tweet and share their love and gratitude, but past players also showed their appreciation for their old manager.
David Beckham called Ferguson a “father figure” and Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the club in 2009, posted a picture of his arrival at Manchester United in 2003 followed by the caption: “Thanks for everything, Boss”.
There has been speculation that he is currently refusing to renew his contract at Real Madrid, amid rumours of a spectacular return to Old Trafford.
But will Ferguson’s retirement impact Ronaldo’s decision in anyway?
Moyes is a stranger to home, whereas Ferguson - who helped the Portuguese star become the world-class player he is today - undoubtedly means a lot to the footballer.
It all depends on what Ronaldo wishes to achieve and what he wants. He either stays at Real Madrid to greet a third manager - Jose Mourinho is expected to leave in the summer - yet remain the star player, or he returns back to Manchester United, where he was crowned World Player of the Year in 2008 and spent six tremendous years.
Manchester United has a huge place in his heart, that was made clear when he barely celebrated his goal against them in the Champions League in March.
For those Manchester United fans, just hope that Ferguson's recent withdrawal will not sway Ronaldo against returning home.
