Frank Lampard has agreed a new contract to stay on at Chelsea for another year, ending speculation over his future.

According to the Telegraph, the Stamford Bridge club have continually put off talks with Lampard’s camp over the past two seasons as they look to resolve the issue of their long-term manager issues.

The report claims the England international signing a new deal indicates Chelsea probably have a good idea over who will be taking over from Rafael Benitez this summer.

Jose Mourinho has been heavily linked with a return to the club he led to two consecutive Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006.

Lampard and Mourinho have often spoken about the positive relationship between them and so the midfielder’s new deal coinciding with the Portuguese’s return would make sense.

Reports of a deal being agreed come in a very positive week for Lampard; last Saturday he became Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer when he scored both in the Blues’ 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

Victory was crucial in their chase for Champions League qualification and it was fitting the record 203rd goal was so important.

It is set to get even better for Lampard on Wednesday evening as he is expected to captain the Chelsea side in their Europa League final clash against Benfica.

The week has proved just how influential Lampard can still be on the pitch but the report claims he has also significantly lowered his financial demands to agree the deal.
